When the Deutsche Reichsbahn decided to electrify all important main lines in 1980, there was a need for powerful universal locomotives. Building on the experience with the 250 series, the prototype of the 212 series was created in 1982 as a 140 km/h variant of the 243, which went into series production in 1984, with an output of 3,720 kW and a top speed of 120 km/h. From 1990 onwards, 150 locomotives were rented by the German Federal Railways and used as class 143, mainly in the Freiburg area and the Ruhr area. After the two German state railways were unified in 1994, the remaining locomotives were also redesignated and have been running all over Germany ever since.
